Visit to the Vidal Colony in the Berguedà

In the municipality of Puig-Reig, in the Berguedà, we find Colònia Vidal, one of the many colonies that existed during the period of the Catalan industrial revolution.

What was the Vidal Colony?

The Vidal Colony was a self-sufficient textile factory. He had housing for workers, church, library and school among other services. In this way the people who worked there should not leave and produce more. Together with Colònia Vidal, we find other colonies along the Llobregat river. This is because the strength of the river was used to produce energy for the factory.

The workers of the Colony worked from Monday to Saturday, with hours that nobody would do today. They got up at 5 in the morning to enter work and left at 6:30 PM. Sunday was the only day they had free, but they had to attend the Mass obligatorily, if they could not be punished with a harder job the next day or even be expelled from the colony.

The family of workers also had to work in the factory, less children under the age of ten, who were enrolled there.

The owner of the colony and the director lived in farmhouses in the same colony, to remember who sent, but even so during the visit they explained to us that the workers had the idealized owner. It was he who gave them work, home and everything they had there.

When entering the factory we could see the looms where bed sheets were made at all times. Only one was started up because we could see the noise it was doing. We can not imagine how it was to be all day supporting the sound of dozens of looms at once.

Working conditions were very precarious and the prevention of occupational hazards was not adequate. Many people were sticking their hands or fingers to the looms, and if they were so bad they could not work that day they did not charge it.

Colonia Vidal offers guided tours like we did. We recommend that you visit it with a guided tour if you want to visit it.

They also told us that the colony was bought by a company to turn it into a mall, but the crisis made the project stop. The next project is to make tourist apartments.
